Duplicates & Templates

Create independent copies of tapes and save reusable starting points for new projects.

Duplicate and template buttons visible in the project browser actions column

Duplicating a tape

Duplicate creates a completely independent copy of a tape. The new tape starts at version 1 with all the same files, but from that point on it has its own history. Changes to the original don't affect the copy, and vice versa.

Use it when you want to take a project in a different direction without affecting the original — for example, creating an alternate mix, a remix, or handing off a stem session to someone else.

Only the tape owner can duplicate it. The new copy belongs to you and is completely independent from that point on.

Personal templates

Save as Template captures a snapshot of your tape as a reusable starting point. Templates are personal — only you can see and use them.

Set up your Ableton project exactly how you like it — your favourite plugins loaded, routing configured, tracks colour-coded — then save it as a template. Next time you start a new project, hit + From Template instead of importing from scratch.

Only the tape owner can save a tape as a template.

How it works

  • Click the copy icon on any tape row to duplicate, or the bookmark icon to save as a template.
  • Both actions show you the tape size and your storage usage before proceeding, so there are no surprises.
  • To create a tape from a template, click + From Template in the toolbar and pick from your saved templates.
  • Duplicated tapes show a “Based on” lineage link back to the original.
  • Templates count toward your storage quota, just like regular tapes.
